Research tools

Research tools

With the aim of promoting musicological and organological research in Tunisia, in particular with regard to Tunisian music and Arab music in general, the CAMM has made available to Tunisian or foreign researchers a certain number of tools, access to which is subject to the following conditions. As a rule consultation is free of charge. However, researchers should provide justification concerning their research project, which must be approved and overseen by competent institutions.

Consultation of sound and audio-visual documents

Because of lack of space for consultation of the collection of sound documents held by the National Sound Archive, access to documents can only be obtained by prior appointment at least 48 h in advance. A   consultation request  form must be completed either at a distance or on site, specifying the purpose of the research and its academic framework.

The listening room

Researchers may carry out their research via the web platform or on   the computers at their disposal in the listening room, either on their own or with the help of the CAMM audio librarian.
The reproduction of sound documents concerns only those recordings which are not commercially available; Copies may be requested on-site or by e-mail; The user has to sign an undertaking confirming that the copies he has obtained from the TNSA are intended exclusively for private use.

The Web platform

The web platform http://phonotheque.cmam.tn  allows access to the audio and audiovisual collections of the TNSA which have been digitized as part of a large-scale digitization operation begun in 2009, as well as any other accompanying documents such as  covers, brochures, leaflets, posters, photos, etc.
As of April 2017, this platform manages thirty corpuses, encompassing 498 collections, namely: The collection of 78/80/45 and 33 rpm records, the oldest of which dates back to 1907, CAMM's collection of recordings made as part of  archiving its  artistic and scientific activities, the collections  of  recordings pertaining to the National Cultural Committee and the Department of Music at the ministry of culture, which were transferred to the TNSA in 1995, the collection  of unpublished recordings made during field collecting campaigns carried out either by the  CAMM teams or by independent researchers with the support of the  CAMM,  through the various Tunisian regions, the collection of recordings collected by Dr. Volfgang Laade in Tunisia during the collecting campaign  he carried out in the late 1960, the recordings made as part of archiving of major  musical  events  organized in Tunisia, such as the Carthge and Hammamet international festivals festivals, the Rachidiya collection and the archives of the International Festival of Testour.

Consultation of printed documents

The references room

Besides the collection of monographs on music that may be consulted on the premises, the CAMM allows researchers’ access to the digitalized collection of the baron Rodolphe d’Erlanger’s personal archives.  This unpublished collection is particularly valuable as it  attests to the intense artistic and scientific activity that went on in the Ennejma Ezzahra palace under the impetus of the Baron during the first two decades of the twentieth century.
